Genie LED Light Code Chart — Complete Diagnostic Guide

Two LED indicators on the powerhead: a small Round LED and a Long LED. Read both together. They light solid, flash, or stay off in blue, red, or purple.

Note: The long LED on the powerhead flashes red during a normal door reversal — this clears automatically on the next cycle. Only worry if the pattern persists when the door is not reversing.

The Most Common Genie Problems — Fixed

Door won't close — round LED flashing red

Safe-T-Beam fault. Check both sensor LEDs at the bottom of the door — the sender (red LED) should be solid, the receiver (green LED) should be solid. If either blinks, realign the sensor by loosening the wing nut, adjusting until the LED goes solid, retightening. Check for spider webs or debris on the sensor lens. Clear any object in the beam path.

To force the door closed once: press and hold the wall console button until fully closed. This overrides the sensor for one cycle — fix the sensor before next use.

Remote won't work — blue or purple flashing round LED

The opener doesn't recognize the remote. Replace the battery first (CR2032 coin cell). Then reprogram using the steps below. Stand at least 5 feet from the opener when programming — too close and the signal gets rejected.

Both LEDs red steady — limits lost

Travel limits need reprogramming. This happens after a power outage, if the door was stopped mid-travel, or if the opener was moved. Run the SmartSet™ travel limit sequence — the door must complete a full open and close cycle for the limits to record properly.

Opener ignores remote, wall button still works

Sure-Lock™ is active. Press the Sure-Lock button on the wall console to deactivate. The red indicator light on the console should turn on (solid red = Sure-Lock OFF on most models).

Long LED red steady — thermal cutout

Motor overheated from too many cycles. Do NOT unplug — let it cool on its own (15–30 minutes). The thermal protection resets automatically. Reduce cycle frequency going forward — most Genie openers are rated 10 cycles per hour maximum.

Programming a Genie Intellicode Remote

Each button on each remote must be programmed separately. Each step has a 30-second time limit.

  1. Pull the battery's protective film from the remote if new.
  2. Press and hold SET/PRGM for 2 seconds until Round LED turns solid blue — release. Long LED flashes purple.
  3. Stand at least 5 feet from opener. Slowly press the remote button twice. Both LEDs will flash then turn off.
  4. Press the remote button once more — the door should run. Done.

To erase all remotes: Enter programming mode (Step 2 above), then press and hold both UP (+) and DOWN (–) buttons simultaneously until both LEDs turn blue — release. All remotes erased.

For multiple door installations: never position Safe-T-Beam pairs where their signals cross. Place adjacent pairs facing in opposite directions to prevent interference.

Sure-Lock™ Explained

Sure-Lock disables all wireless remotes while keeping the wired wall button functional — Genie's equivalent of LiftMaster's Lock Mode. Useful for vacations or securing the opener without disconnecting it.

Activate: Press the Sure-Lock button — indicator goes off (or flashes on some consoles). Remotes disabled, wall button closes only.

Deactivate: Press Sure-Lock again — red indicator turns on (solid). Remotes re-enabled.

ChainMax vs SilentMax — Key Differences

ChainMax — Chain Drive
  • Metal chain — visible along the rail
  • Louder — better for detached garages
  • More durable in temperature extremes
  • Lower cost
SilentMax — Belt Drive
  • Rubber belt — significantly quieter
  • Best for attached garages below living spaces
  • Smoother start/stop
  • Higher cost

Programming, troubleshooting, LED codes, and maintenance are identical for both models.
