โ ๏ธ If Your Spring Just Broke โ Stop Here
Do not try to open or operate your garage door with a broken spring. The door is extremely heavy without spring support and can fall suddenly. Disconnect the opener using the red emergency cord and call a technician. Spring replacement runs $150โ$350 and is almost always same-day in North Alabama.
A garage door spring failure is the most common garage door emergency in North Alabama โ and one of the most startling. Here are the six signs that tell you a spring has broken, from the most obvious to the ones people often miss.
Sign 1 โ A Loud Bang From the Garage
Most homeowners describe a broken torsion spring as sounding like a gunshot or a heavy piece of furniture falling over. If you heard a loud bang from your garage โ especially when you weren't opening or closing the door โ a spring almost certainly just snapped. The sound comes from the enormous tension releasing all at once as the coil breaks.
This is the most definitive sign. If you heard the bang, go straight to what to do below โ skip the rest of the diagnostic steps.
Sign 2 โ The Door Won't Open (Or Barely Moves)
Your opener runs, makes its normal noise, but the door barely budges or doesn't move at all. You might see the opener carriage moving along the rail while the door stays put.
This happens because the opener is designed to move a balanced door โ one where the spring counterbalances the door's weight. Without the spring, the opener is trying to lift 150โ400 lbs of dead weight, which it simply can't do. Most openers sense the load and stop to protect their motor.
Sign 3 โ A Visible Gap in the Spring Coil
Look at the horizontal metal shaft running above your garage door opening. If you have torsion springs, you'll see one or two tightly-wound coils on this shaft. A broken torsion spring will have a visible gap โ typically a 2โ4 inch separation where the coil snapped. You may also see a piece of the spring lying on the floor below.
For extension springs (which run along the sides of your door), look for a spring that appears stretched out, loose, or visibly in two pieces.
Sign 4 โ The Door Feels Extremely Heavy
Pull the red emergency cord to disconnect your opener, then try to manually lift the door. A properly balanced garage door should feel nearly weightless โ the spring does most of the work. A door with a broken spring will feel like lifting its full weight, typically 150โ400 lbs. Most people can't lift it more than a few inches alone.
This is an important safety test. If the door is very heavy, do not attempt to manually use it. Get help and only move it if absolutely necessary for security.
Sign 5 โ The Door Opens Crooked or Unevenly
On double-car garage doors with two torsion springs, if only one spring breaks, the door may open unevenly โ rising higher on one side than the other. You'll see the door appear tilted or hear grinding as the off-balance door scrapes against the track.
This is more dangerous than a complete failure because the opener may continue running, putting enormous stress on the tracks, rollers, and opener mechanism. Stop using the door immediately if you notice this.
Sign 6 โ The Opener Runs But Reverses Immediately
Many modern openers detect the resistance of a broken spring (the door being too heavy) and immediately reverse to protect the motor. You'll press the remote or wall button, the door moves an inch or two, and then reverses back up. If your sensors are aligned and nothing is blocking the door, a broken spring is the most likely cause.

Torsion Spring vs. Extension Spring โ Which Did You Break?
๐ Torsion Spring
- Horizontal bar above the door
- 1โ2 springs wound on a shaft
- Gap visible when broken
- Most homes built after 1990
- Repair cost: $150โ$350
๐ Extension Spring
- Along both sides of the door
- Stretch horizontally
- May appear loose or broken
- Older homes, lower clearance
- Repair cost: $120โ$220
What to Do When Your Spring Breaks
- Don't operate the opener. Using the opener with a broken spring strains the motor and can cause further damage โ or worse, cause the door to fall.
- Disconnect the opener. Pull the red emergency release cord hanging from the opener rail to disconnect the door from the drive mechanism.
- If the door is open, use a clamp or locking pliers on the track above a roller to hold it while you're away. Never leave an open door unattended.
- If the door is closed, leave it closed. It's secure and won't go anywhere.
- Call for same-day service. Spring replacement is fast โ most North Alabama technicians carry common spring sizes and can complete the job in 1โ2 hours.
